{"id":1386,"date":"2024-09-07T18:28:41","date_gmt":"2024-09-08T01:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bouldersfarm.com\/wordpress\/?p=1386"},"modified":"2024-10-09T10:32:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:32:05","slug":"august-2024-accomplishments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bouldersfarm.com\/wordpress\/august-2024-accomplishments\/","title":{"rendered":"August 2024 Accomplishments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here\u2019s a summary of what we accomplished in August on our various projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Personnel\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hired Rebecca as seasonal farmhand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welcomed Claire back from her leave of absence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bridge\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finished installing the decking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placed 118 tons of rock for the western approach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finished site cleanup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load tested the bridge with:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>John Deere Gator (about 1500 lbs. plus operator)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bobcat Toolcat (about 5600 lbs. plus operator)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toolcat with 1\/4 cord of dry firewood on a pallet (about 6400 lbs. plus operator)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dodge Ram 2500 pickup (about 6600 lbs. plus operator)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John Deere 35D mini-excavator (about 8000 lbs. plus operator)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ordered and received signage (speed limit, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placed the bridge in service almost exactly two years after we placed the arches. What a project this was, but we&#8217;re all happy with the results!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barn\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tidied up the worksite in preparation for resuming work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moved all needed tools from bridge worksite to barn worksite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirmed that framing is still plumb, square, and true<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replaced some temporary braces to keep everything plumb, square, and true<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North wall\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identified and repaired pockets of wood decay in existing framing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installed hardware to resist uplift and overturning forces (wind and seismic)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hospitality\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hosted one-day planning retreat for Childhood Health Associates of Salem providers and families<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garden\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Began harvesting tomatoes <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Zucchini harvest continued<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tomatillos being harvested<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harvested a few purple snap beans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planted some kale <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hayfields\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 4&#8243; cut on the fescue harvest this spring appeared to result in grass that stayed at least somewhat green even to the end of August. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South field still has a lot of weed pressure from coastal tarweed, but it looks like last month&#8217;s mowing set it back enough that there will be minimal seed production this year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horse feedback on this year&#8217;s hay:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Horses are eating north field hay that has a fair bit of false chamomile in it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horses are picking through south field hay that has coastal tarweed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South field hay that had a lot of velvet grass in it produced a slightly sticky hay, but the horses are eating it just fine. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pastures\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First half of the month still okay for light grazing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second half of the month we closed off the pastures <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forestry\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moved deck of logs (leftover from Zahler&#8217;s thinning) at edge of north field to mill yard\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Successfully used the fetching arch with the junior arch trailing to move longer logs for the first time. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moving long logs across the bridge (east to west) with the logging arches works fine, but clearance at the peak of the bridge is tight; larger diameter logs will require a skid plate at the bridge peak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moved logs from North Flat to mill yard. They came from a wolf Douglas-fir that came down last winter due to ice. The first two logs were 16&#8242; each, scaling to about 500 board-feet between them. They are fairly knotty, but will make good 1x material for the barn.
