We have about twice as much acreage in forest as we do in fields and orchards. Even though we aren’t falling trees for firewood, between orchard work and windfalls, we have more firewood than we can use. We also generate other products\u2014like chips and shavings\u2014as a result of some of our other operations on the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This batch is from trees that were felled in the spring of 2017 and split in the summer of 2018. Big-leaf maple is a native hardwood that really is underappreciated. It produces a nice amount of heat and burns cleanly. It grows fairly quickly and in marginal soils, getting it good marks for sustainability. It doesn’t have pitch, so your hands and clothing stay clean! Use a little bit more kindling than you would with fir and you will quickly have a pleasant fire. Maple firewood is what we use to heat our farmhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
