Even though we aren&#8217;t falling trees for firewood, between orchard work and windfalls, we have more firewood than we can use. Big-leaf maple is a native hardwood that really is underappreciated. It produces a nice amount of heat and burns cleanly. It grows fairly quickly and in marginal soils, getting it good marks for sustainability. It doesn&#8217;t have pitch, so your hands and clothing stay clean! Use a little bit more kindling than you would with fir and you will quickly have a pleasant fire. Maple firewood is what we use to heat our farmhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average length is around 15\u201d.
