How environmentally friendly are you?
Boulder’s Farm is thoroughly committed to using sustainable, human-scale agricultural and forestry practices. We’re continuously working to reduce our carbon footprint, including weaning ourselves off petroleum-based fuel. We use no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.
Are your products certified organic?
No, as a small-volume farm, we are exempt from USDA organic certification requirements. However, we are in the process of obtaining organic certification. We hope to obtain organic certification for most, if not all, of our products by the end of 2020.
If you aren’t certified, then how can you claim that your products are organic?
We are following the USDA organic rules for small-volume exempt growers. These rules require us to follow the same farming practices as farms that are certified organic. By following these rules, we are allowed to use the word “organic” in our labeling and marketing, but we cannot claim to be “certified organic”, nor can we use the USDA organic symbol on our products.
It is our belief that no USDA non-organic substances have been used on our farm since September of 2016, but we are still in the process of verifying that this is correct. We can, however, unequivocally state that no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides have been used in our fields, orchard, or forest since September of 2016.
We will update this as we continue to move through the organic certification process with Oregon Tilth.
